Rennie Mackintosh
Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a contemporary of FLW across the pond, in Scotland and the British Isles. While FLW developed the arts and crafts movement here in the states, utilizing symmetry and geometry, CRM was more closely associated with the Art Nouveau style, with a turn-of-the-century progression toward clean, straight lines while still incorporating the floral tones of old. In this space, you see mainly the Arts and Crafts influence, but small indicators bring it back around toward the Nouveau style, i.e., the Motawi tiles used in the back splash, the arch added to the island counter top, and the flow of the bench seating in the eating area and leading directly into the main work area. Subtle, but definitely ever-present, this space is a wonderful fusion of the Americas and Scotland.
